Spotlight on Habitat Volunteer, Kelly Hutchison

Kelly Hutchison is probably one of Habitat's most energetic and hardworking volunteers in spite of having to cope with Multiple Sclerosis. She retired as General Manager of Lake West Cinema in 2003; prior to that, she was Deputy Auditor of Camden County, MO. She is a Paul Harris Fellow of the Laurie-Sunrise Beach Rotary Club and was General Manager of Westlake Aquatic Center in Laurie, which is wholly owned and operated by the Rotary club. She volunteers to work a donation booth for the City of Laurie's Enchanted Village of Lights every Christmas season. Kelly decided that she would not let her disease keep her from being a contributing member of society so, even in her "down times" when bed rest is required, she puts the time to good use by working on her favorite project, Habitat for Humanity. For the last five years she has served as Master Database Coordinator for all Habitat mailings. She also keeps our Habitat website up to date. If you would like to be added to our mailing list, please contact her at 573-372-6384 or e-mail her at keekee812@earthlink.net Watch for an article about Kelly in the May issue of L.O. Profile. Kelly's motto that she strives to live by is that in the spirit of humanity...Service Above Self. He Profits Most Who Serves Best.

Resale Store Progress

The Resale store in Keystone Industrial Park is constructed. The lumber has arrived to finish the interior. The septic system, the heating and cooling system and the plumbing are in the process of being installed as well as the electrical wiring. The interior partitioning for the restrooms and the office space is also underway. Additional grounds work for parking and entrance ramps must also be completed. The projected opening is early May. Watch local newspapers for Grand Opening date. Photo at left above shows the outside of the warehouse and the one on the right shows work being done on the inside.

Resale Store Volunteers Needed

Once our new resale store opens, we would like to be open for business three days a week instead of only on Saturdays. However, to do so we will need more volunteer cashier help. If you could help for three hours, 9am to noon, on any of the resale days please call or email Chris Reth at 317-1843 or ChrisReth2@aol.com. This job is ideal for those who love to shop.

Thank You to all our Fundraisers

Panera Bread: As one of Panera's selected charitable organizations for their "Operation Dough-Nation 2007" Habitat received $870.06. A container was placed at the counter for patrons to place their donations to four organizations and Panera matched these donations. Panera announced that they chose the same four organizations for "Operation Dough-Nation" for 2008. Money will be collected during the months of Jan. through March.

B&B Theater: There will be a special promotion for Habitat at a movie March 14 - "Dr. Suess and Horton's Years of Who". Patrons will be asked to make a donation to our Habitat affiliate when coming to the movie on that date.

Harlem Ambassadors Fundraiser: Habitat will host the Harlem Ambassadors basketball exhibition team in a fundraiser Nov. 16 at Camdenton High School. The Optimist Club has agreed to to join with us in this fundraiser offering their experience with the Kelly Circus. In return the proceeds will be split between the two organizations.

Products and Services Show

Above is Habitat's booth at the Products and Services Show
Saturday and Sunday March 1-2 at Country Club Hotel . Shown in
the picture from left are volunteers Yvonne Vogel and Donna
Puckett, the 2008 Habitat Partner Family Mom. The show brought
in several new volunteers, possibly a new board member and some
donations. It was a good opportunity to get our Habitat presence
before the public.

Volunteer Opportunities

Most people know that Habitat needs workers to build its homes. They may not realize that there are many more opportunities to help behind the scenes. Volunteers are needed to help raise money for purchasing building materials and supplies; to contact local businesses to solicit donations of materials; to interview and select partner families; to provide training for families regarding home maintenance, property taxes and insurance; to help in spreading the word about Habitat's mission throughout the community; and to maintaincontact with local churches and service organizations to solicit all types of support. This affiliate has no paid staff.

How to Get Involved

If you or someone you know is interested in helping in the Habitat building process or would like to serve on any of the committees, please contact any of the officers listed on page 2. If you have questions about Habitat or would like to arrange for someone to visit with you or make a presentation to your civic
organization, please contact Sheryl Cheves at (573) 873-0436 jscheves@sbcglobal.net or Marvin Johnson at (573)346-1941 marvinj31@aol.com

Partner Family Selection

Families in need of decent shelter due to current unsatisfactory housing situations should apply to the Lake of the Ozarks Habitat for Humanity affiliate for consideration. The Family Selection Committee will review applications and choose homeowners based on their level of need, their willingness to become partners in the program and their ability to repay the no-interest loan.

 A Word from the President

As the new Board President, I want to take this
opportunity to thank all of our supporters for
their past generosity. We have completed eight
houses and will start number nine in April on
North Ozark Drive in Camdenton.

We have lost a number of long time Board
members, and I thank them for their outstanding
service. Fortunately, we have gained a number
of new members, and I look forward to working
with them in the future.

Thank you for your support which helped
provide housing for 13 adults and 28 children.
House number nine will increase these numbers
to 15 adults and 35 children. That should make
you feel good about supporting Habitat for Humanity.

Tom Reth
Affiliate President
